Good Practice 13

Context of practice
Type of context: all types of teaching (face-to-face, online or blended).
Type of teaching: all types of teaching (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Ph, Master, Doctorate).
Year: all years (First, Second, etc.)

Problem and objectives
As teachers and researchers, we receive a large number of e-mails on a daily basis. Most of these emails come from students, especially from the first years of the degree, where the number of students is higher. For this reason, we propose that any communication with the teacher or delivery of online practices must be done through Studium, a platform managed by the University of Salamanca.  This good practice is motivated by a real incident. A few days ago, a lecturer from our department asked the students to hand in an internship via Studium within a set deadline. One of the students sent her an email stating that he could not upload the practical on the platform and attached his work in the same email. When he opened the Word file to correct it, his computer was hacked, rendering it completely unusable. The student claims not to have sent any email with any practice attached.  The main objective is for the Studium platform to act as a security firewall. Although many of the warnings are forwarded to email, we believe that the platform can perform an important first virus scan.

Tools and resources
Studium platform (virtual campus of the University of Salamanca). https://studium.usal.es/

Description of practice
All students who wish to communicate with the teacher must do so through the platform. Online deliverable practices will only be corrected if they have been uploaded on the platform.

Expected results
Familiarisation of students with the Studium platform. The use of this tool can provide teachers with a more efficient and clearer organisation, differentiating between teaching and research activities, as well as providing greater cyber security.

Strengths or advantages
Protection against attacks is enhanced by the fact that the high volume of emails and online deliverables we receive daily pass through the platform’s firewall rather than directly into our personal mailboxes. This process adds an additional layer of security by detecting potential threats before they reach our inboxes. In addition, the platform provides an effective tool for teacher organisation.

Risks or weaknesses
The platform experiences a crash or does not perform adequately as an expected firewall. If there are problems with file uploading, the evaluation method may need to be modified or changed due to system failure.

Need for support
I do not require assistance with the strategy to be followed. However, I would be happy to participate in practical sessions to improve my competence in the use of Studium, in order to get the most out of it. Studium, in order to get the most out of it.
