Context of practice
Type of context: face-to-face teaching
Type of teaching: Degree in Global Studies.
Year: Second year
Problem and objectives
Students have to complete 4 practical activities and I have to give them the marks for each of them, in addition to the final mark. They only have to do 2 of the 4 activities, but those who do more than 2 will have a corresponding mark (if 2 are handed in, each activity is worth 0.5 points; if 3 are handed in, each is worth 1.33; etc.). Therefore, in order for them to understand their marks, it would be better to give them an Excel with all the marks and not to give them the mark through the (more secure and identity-protecting) University system, where they should be marked separately. Problems: an Excel with the names and identities of each of them + how to send them the document securely (mail, cloud…).
Tools and resources
I always use my own computer, even if the university provides me with computers. This is because I prefer to keep all my data secure and on the apple platform and because I manage all logins with a password manager (OnePassword). Also, all university-related files are not on my own computer, but in an institutional Onedrive folder.
Description of practice
In the Excel file with all the notes I will do the following in the following order: delete the names of the students. Use the Excel tool that deletes certain elements of the DNIs so that you can only know which one is yours. Delete the data of the document in tools. Save it. Send it not through the mail in the normal way, but through the University platform (which informs them of the sending through an email).
Expected results
Provide learners with the best way for them to visualise their results and protect their data.
Strengths or advantages
Use of a mixed strategy: using the university’s secure platform while being able to edit their notes in a more organised way.
Risks or weaknesses
Use my own computer rather than the university computer, even if it is a more “secure” operating system.
Need for support
I can carry it out.
Others:
Using the cloud is a dead end, as it is practically impossible to get used to having your data on a computer and manually backing it up to external hard drives. However, the worry of losing them and leaving them in the hands of companies is always present, even if you do it through the one that is supposed to be more secure as it belongs to the university and is within the framework of the European Union.
