Good Practice 8

Context of practice
Type of context: face-to-face teaching
Type of teaching: Degree.
Year: First year
Subject: Direct Translation I English-Spanish

Problem and objectives
Problem:
Problems with AI (ChatGPT) and automatic translation software (Google Translate and DeepL, mainly): use of these tools by students without concern for disclosing the privacy of their data. Over-reliance on these tools (instead of developing critical thinking).
Objectives: To make students aware of best practices in the use of such tools in order not to disclose their private data.

Tools and resources
Share with students good practices of using tools such as ChatGPT and DeepL. For example: 1) do not upload files in Word or PDF that contain your personal data (name); 2) anonymise documents before uploading; 3) review terms of service, cookies and privacy policies.

Description of practice
In the first lesson explain the dangers of using the above mentioned tools as a risk of data breaches or security breaches that can compromise shared personal information (which can later be used against them or sold to third parties). Emphasise that they can develop a dependency on the tools that ends up affecting their critical thinking skills.  Share with students a news article about the dangers of sharing personal data.

Expected results
Pupils become aware of the use of their private data on the Internet and stop clicking “Accept cookies” without thinking about it first. Students consciously check what information they enter into online tools such as ChatGPT or DeepL. Finally, before resorting to the tool, they try to solve the problem on their own (to develop critical thinking skills): they use the tools as a last resort.

Strengths or advantages
The strengths lie in developing students’ awareness of the use of their data, which can even carry over into other spheres of their lives. Seeing that there is no ethics in the use of their data and that we are constantly monitored and watched, some students will become more aware and careful about sharing their private information.

Risks or weaknesses
The risks consist of a lack of interest in the subject and little concern for disclosure. Therefore, the aim is to show the importance of this topic in our contemporary world.

Need for support
In principle, no. With the SPATADAS resources I can create a successful presentation,
