Are We Safe on the Internet When Using Social Networks?

Internet security is an important concern for all of us who utilize the web for communication, information, entertainment, and learning. While the Internet offers numerous opportunities, it also presents certain risks and challenges. It’s essential to understand how to safeguard ourselves from unwanted content, fake news, malicious comments, identity theft, cyberbullying, and other dangers that may lurk online.

On January 24, 2024, Ivana Vadlja, a computer science teacher at the First Elementary School in Čakovec, conducted a workshop with the 7th-grade students.

The workshop focused on social networks, influencers, and the potential pitfalls of the Internet. Its primary objectives were to raise awareness about the significance of safe and responsible Internet use and to empower students to identify and avoid potential online hazards. The workshop covered the following key topics:

  1. Safe and Smart Use of Social Networks: Understanding the fundamentals of social networks and learning how to utilize them securely.
  2. Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Networks: Exploring the benefits and drawbacks of social networks for both personal and professional development.
  3. Critical Evaluation of Online Information: Developing skills to recognize and critically evaluate information obtained from the Internet, particularly from influencers.
  4. Protection Against Online Frauds: Learning strategies to safeguard oneself from fake profiles, fake friends, fake followers, and fake likes.
  5. Dealing with Cyberbullying: Understanding how to handle negative comments, haters, trolls, and cyberbullying incidents effectively.
  6. Awareness of Online Risks: Recognizing and understanding concepts such as outing, cyber grooming, and catfishing to stay safe online.

The workshop provided valuable insights and practical guidance to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. By fostering awareness and empowering individuals to make informed decisions, we can contribute to creating a safer online environment for everyone.
