My Data, My Privacy: Learning to Protect Personal Information

First-grade students from I. Primary School Čakovec participated in an interactive workshop designed to help them understand the concept of personal data and the importance of protecting it, especially in online environments.

Through engaging discussions and hands-on activities, students learned to recognize which types of information qualify as personal data and why it is essential to keep such details private. They explored real-life situations where sharing personal information could pose risks, particularly when interacting with strangers on the internet.

To reinforce these lessons, students took part in an educational game that helped them distinguish between personal and general data. Each participant received slips of paper with different pieces of information, such as their name, surname, home address, favorite color, phone number, and favorite game. Their task was to sort these details into two categories: personal data and general data.

After completing the activity, a group discussion encouraged students to reflect on their choices and share their thoughts on data privacy. Through this exchange, they concluded that personal information should only be shared with trusted adults, such as parents or teachers, and never with unfamiliar individuals—whether in person or online.

The workshop aimed to develop students’ awareness of digital privacy and empower them with the knowledge needed to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. By fostering these early conversations about data security, students are better prepared to make informed decisions and protect their personal information in everyday situations.
