Students at First Primary School Čakovec Learn About Online Communication and Digital Etiquette

Students at First Primary School Čakovec recently participated in an interactive workshop on Online Communication and Internet Etiquette, aimed at helping them navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. The activity covered essential topics such as safe online interactions, responsible sharing, privacy protection, and preventing hate speech.

The session began with a discussion on what is safe to share online, highlighting the importance of protecting personal and financial information. Students learned how digital footprints can have long-term consequences and explored ways to maintain a positive online presence.

Another key topic was the rapid spread of information on the internet, where students examined both the benefits and risks of online communication. While the internet allows for quick access to valuable information and global connections, it also facilitates the spread of misinformation and fake news. Students were taught how to verify sources and critically assess online content.

The concept of netiquette was introduced, emphasizing respectful communication on forums, chats, and social media platforms. Through practical examples, students compared anonymous and registered user interactions, discussing the advantages and risks of both.

A significant part of the workshop focused on smart sharing on social media, guiding students on what information should remain private and how to build a responsible digital presence. Privacy settings, data protection strategies, and the importance of respecting copyright were also discussed.

Additionally, students explored safe virtual communities for learning and collaboration, such as eTwinning, MS Teams, and Loomen. They were introduced to privacy settings and community rules that help ensure a secure online environment.

To address hate speech and cyberbullying, students analyzed real-life examples and learned strategies for responding appropriately. They discussed the importance of avoiding provocation, reporting harmful content, and promoting positive interactions online.

As a final task, students created digital posters, flyers, or infographics using Canva, outlining their personal internet safety plans. These included steps such as strengthening passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and adjusting privacy settings. Their projects were then uploaded to MS Teams in the Online Communication and Internet Etiquettefolder.

This workshop helped students develop critical digital literacy skills, preparing them to communicate safely and respectfully in the online world. By fostering responsible online behavior, First Primary School Čakovec continues to support students in becoming informed and ethical digital citizens.
